Leonardo Jardim signs new three-year deal with Ligue 1 champions Monaco

first_img1 Leonardo Jardim has signed a new contract to continue as Monaco coach after guiding the Principality club to the Ligue 1 title. The Portuguese, who has been in charge since 2014, has signed a new three-year deal to stay with the club until 2020. The announcement comes after a season in which Monaco won the Ligue 1 crown by eight points from Paris St Germain and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.“The confidence the club has shown in me has always been essential to me,” Jardim said on the club’s website. “I feel part of AS Monaco and the Principality. I am therefore very happy to continue my work at AS Monaco.“The last three seasons were exceptional, culminating in becoming champions of France. We will work with ambition to continue this project and continue to grow this club with the same passion that has inspired us from the beginning.”Jardim could have his work cut out, however, with Monaco at risk of losing several players that helped them to the title.Playmaker Bernardo Silva has already departed for Manchester City, who continue to be linked with full-back Benjamin Mendy.Teenage sensation Kylian Mbappe is one of the hottest properties in football, with talk of a potential world-record transfer this summer. The club’s top-scorer from last season, Radamel Falcao, is sticking around however, having signed a new contract last week.Jardim will be looking to the club to help plug those gaps in the transfer market this summer, and Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev said the two men shared the same desires when it came to shaping Monaco’s future.“The project continues with Leonardo and I am very happy,” he said. “He is one of the best coaches in European football and despite other offers he has chosen to continue the adventure at AS Monaco, which demonstrates our ambition. “The work he has done since his arrival is considerable, and the Ligue 1 title is the perfect illustration. But we had a common desire to continue to develop the club’s project, and it is therefore with great pride that we announce today the extension of his contract.” The Portuguese boss has extended his stay until 2020 last_img read more
