For the second straight year, Serena Williams’s bid to make history at the U.S. Open was derailed in a semifinal upset. Last year, Williams was seeking to complete the first calendar-year Grand Slam since Steffi Graf in 1988 and to tie Graf’s Open-era record of 22 career major titles when she was defeated by No. 43 Roberta Vinci. On Thursday night, Williams was two match wins from passing Graf in career major titles, but, hampered by an injury to her left knee, she lost to No. 11 Karolina Pliskova.Williams was ranked No. 1 heading into both matches. And according to win probabilities based on our tennis Elo ratings, both results were big surprises: She had a 97 percent chance of beating Vinci and an 87 percent chance against Pliskova.1In this article, our estimates of win probability heading into matches at this year’s U.S. Open use a blend of players’ overall Elo ratings and Elo ratings based only on hard-court matches, according to the methods described in our article about our tournament forecast. For earlier matches, we’re using probabilities based on overall Elo ratings for both players. That’s not unusual for Williams, who has left majors in two ways over the past five years, each one happening about as often as the other: Either as the champion (9 of 20) or as the loser of a big upset (11 of 20). She has had at least an 85 percent chance of winning all 11 of the matches she has lost at majors since 2012 (her first year playing the majors in her 30s). Those 11 losses are among the 14 most surprising of her career at majors: In other words, her 14 Slam losses for which she entered the matches with the highest Elo-based win probabilities. The series of surprise losses is the result of two factors:1) Williams is losing more matches she should win, perhaps a reflection of increased susceptibility in her 30s to injury or wear during a tournament. She has won 89 percent of Slam matches since 2012 in which she had an 85 percent chance or better, compared with a 96 percent win percentage in the same type of matches before 2012.2In both time periods, the average of her win probability in these matches was 95 percent.2) Against a field with fewer all time-greats than she faced earlier in her career, Williams is playing a lot more matches as a big favorite, giving her more opportunities to be upset: She has had at least an 85 percent chance of winning in 88 percent of her major matches since the start of 2012, compared with 64 percent earlier.

Share Alex Wong/Getty ImagesThen-FBI Director Robert Mueller testifies during a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee in June 2013.Special counsel Robert Mueller stepped down Wednesday after concluding Donald Trump didn’t conspire with Russia’s interference in the 2016 election — but also detailing what critics called a range of troubling conduct.Mueller addressed reporters at the Justice Department in his first public statement since taking over the Russia investigation, ending one of the most unusual periods of silence by such a high profile public official.Mueller, 74, is one of the most decorated law enforcement officers of his generation and was the longest-serving FBI leader since J. Edgar Hoover. He was appointed in the spring of 2017 to take over the FBI’s inquiry into whether Trump’s campaign had conspired with Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election. In a word, the answer was no, according to the special counsel’s findings.Nor did Mueller decide whether to bring criminal charges in connection with Trump’s attempts to frustrate that investigation. So Attorney General William Barr concluded there would be none.In the end, the decision was “binary,” as Barr later told lawmakers: Did Mueller’s findings have sufficient weight to justify criminal charges? No, concluded Barr. That announcement was hailed by Trump and his supporters and met with deep skepticism by Democrats and Trump’s other opponents.Mueller, who had become a cult figure for members of a self-styled “resistance” who prayed — in some cases, literally — that he could bring Trump down, instead delivered what Republicans called a political inoculation of a kind seldom enjoyed by a president. The company manA longtime registered Republican, Mueller served under presidents from both political parties, winning the confidence of attorneys general from John Ashcroft under George W. Bush to Eric Holder under Barack Obama.“I don’t know a person more dedicated to the concept and ideal of justice,” Ashcroft told NPR after Mueller was named special counsel in May 2017. “Mueller is a person of character and insight, industry and integrity.”Under Trump, however, Mueller and his office endured withering criticism from the president himself and Republican allies who accused the special counsel of assembling “angry Democrats” to perpetuate a “witch hunt.”Mueller’s investigation led to charges against some two dozen Russians for allegedly interfering in the 2016 election.Mueller’s work also led to guilty pleas from or criminal charges against a number of people tied to Trump’s 2016 campaign, including his former national security adviser Michael Flynn, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and former deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates.Trump’s former longtime lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty in a federal case in New York City that had been referred by Mueller’s office, and he later entered a second guilty plea for lying to Congress.Cohen and Manafort were sentenced to prison. Flynn and Gates are awaiting the resolution to their cases as they continue to cooperate with authorities. But the president described Mueller’s inquiry as a “hoax,” rejecting the need for an investigation into whether there were any “links and/or coordination,” as Mueller’s commission described it, between the Trump campaign and the Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.Ultimately, Mueller did not charge any Americans with a crime connected to his initial mandate — “collusion,” as it became known — but he did establish many previously unknown ties between Trump’s camp and Russia, even as Trump was denying any communication or business links. At the same time Trump was denying any business relationship with Russia, for example — as he was campaigning on the need to improve ties between Washington and Moscow — Cohen was negotiating a big potential real estate deal in the Russian capital.Trump’s allies also said prosecutors and FBI agents on the special counsel team had demonstrated “bias” by making political contributions to candidates or expressing private disdain for Trump in text messages.Sword of DamoclesMueller’s removal had been threatened for months, as a pressure campaign intensified after the special counsel team advanced to interview members of Trump’s inner circle in the White House. At least one of Trump’s attempts to fire Mueller was rejected by then-White House counsel Don McGahn — but the president didn’t press the issue. He did, however, later ask McGahn to create a document denying the earlier incident had taken place, according to Mueller’s report.Critics called that obstruction of justice.Trump has said all along that he did nothing wrong and he pointed to the cooperation his administration gave to Mueller. All those witness interviews, including with McGahn, and documents could never amount to obstruction, Trump argued.Even so, Trump said he also maintained that he had the power to fire Mueller, as he had fired former FBI Director James Comey, and remain within his power under the Constitution.“I could fire everybody right now,” Trump said. “But I don’t want to stop it because politically, I don’t like stopping it.”Mueller made virtually no public statements to defend himself. Apart from a few comments in response to press reports by a spokesman, Mueller’s office was a black box.The unfinished workMueller’s resignation does not mean the end of cases connected to Trump.Trump’s friend and GOP political consultant Roger Stone, for example, is set to go on trial in the autumn in connection with charges that he engaged in witness tampering, lied to Congress and obstructed its inquiry into the role he played in 2016 as an alleged conduit to WikiLeaks.Stone has pleaded not guilty and says he did nothing wrong.U.S. attorneys offices up and down the East Coast also are believed to be investigating Trump, as are some state law enforcement officials — for example, those with jurisdiction over Trump Tower in New York. And Democrats are using their majority in the House to pursue a number of their own inquiries into Trump and Russia, Trump’s business practices, Trump’s inauguration committee and other subjects.Members of Congress also want to hear from Mueller himself. The leaders of the House Judiciary Committee have agreed they want to call Mueller to testify about the conduct of his investigation. What hasn’t been arranged is when such a hearing might take place or whether Mueller would even agree to appear. Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said last week he believed Mueller wanted to talk with members of Congress behind closed doors.Burning down the bureauTrump opposed Mueller and targeted federal law enforcement from the beginning. For example, in December 2017, Trump said in a tweet that the FBI’s reputation was “in Tatters.”And in early February 2018, he maintained that leaders at both the FBI and the Justice Department “have politicized the sacred investigative process in favor of Democrats and against Republicans — something which would have been unthinkable just a short time ago.”Former FBI director Comey, whose firing in May 2017 prompted the appointment of Mueller, complained that the president and his allies had chosen a strategy to defend themselves that prompted them to decide to “burn down the entire FBI.”Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the man who handpicked Mueller for the job to instill public confidence in the Russia investigation, defended Mueller amid attacks from Trump and Republicans in Congress.Rosenstein pointed out that the special counsel had moved an FBI agent off the team quickly after his disparaging texts came to light.“He is running that office appropriately, recognizing that people have political views but ensuring that those views are not in any way a factor in how they conduct themselves in office,” Rosenstein testified before Congress in December 2017.He had said that no one was more qualified for the complex and sensitive job than Mueller and that he had seen no “good cause” to fire him.Copyright 2019 NPR. New Delhi: Holi, the festival of colours, is fun as we paint the town in hues of the rainbow. But, at the same time, your hair, skin and eyes have to brave the chemicals those pretty colours contain. Experts suggest that a pre-and post-Holi regime can be a boon and save you from allergies if followed properly. To start with pre-care, you cannot afford to ignore your ear lobes and nails. Preeti Seth, cosmetologist at Pachouli Wellness Clinic, and dermatologist Aparna Santhanam suggest applying oil in and around your ear lobes and placing a small ball of cotton into your ears before you go out to play so that your inner ear is well protected. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfSeth said: “Always clip your nails because there is no way that you can protect your nails if they are long; and apply a dark nail paint to protect your nails. Colours will come off easily when you remove nail polish.” To prevent colours from clogging the pores, Seth says it’s best to avoid shaving 2-3 days before.Jyotsana Makkar, in-house ayurvedic doctor for Kama Ayurveda, suggests application of almond oil on your face and other exposed parts of body and hair – and braid your hair if possible. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsive”Besides being a nourishment agent with high levels of vitamin E, almond oil also forms a protective layer on your skin and hair and saves you from the damage of chemical colour,” says Makkar. Amit Karkhanis, medical cosmetologist at Dr. Tvacha Clinic, says using coconut oil on your entire body before you step out to play Holi will act as a moisturiser and an anti-inflammatory, and prevent sun damage. A common suggestion by all the experts is that a good sunscreen, with an SPF factor of at least 40, is a must-do, just half an hour before leaving the house. “Expecting mothers can opt for a pomegranate or jojoba oil as these natural oils are safe to use on the face and protect pores,” says Shubhika Jain from RAS Luxury Oils. Do not neglect your hair on the occasion, which somehow many forget about and then repent. One must do deep champi (massage) in the days preceding Holi to prepare the hair and scalp for the festival,” added Jain. Dermatologist Rashmi Shetty suggests different tips for different kinds of hair textures.”For straight hair, apply a new age coconut oil that has ingredients like jasmine as it known to strengthen the hair and make it less prone to breakage even after too much exposure to colours,” she said. Curly hair needs extra care, so Shetty suggests taking a generous amount of coconut-based oil and applying it to your scalp and the length of your hair before you go out to play.Post-Holi, it is not exactly a cake walk to get rid of the tough colours and its imperative to swipe off the several coatings of oils and sunscreen that were layered onto your hair and skin. Makkar suggests an ubtan soap-free body cleanser which is made up of natural ingredients like turmeric, fenugreek, sandalwood, neem, oatmeal and more.”You will need to shampoo a couple of times to remove all traces of colour. Wash your hair with a very mild shampoo daily to get rid of residual colour and dirt. Follow this with an application of warm oil. This will help restore and rejuvenate your hair, nourishing it back to health,” said Shetty. Seth suggests that if the colour is too harsh, apply lemon wedges to that area as the stains will lighten. Lastly, it may have not occurred to you but your eyes are the most vulnerable when it comes to the effects of Holi. Sameer Kaushal, Senior Consultant Opthalmologist at Tattvan eclinics, says it is crucial to always cover your eyes while playing with colours as they contain toxic substances which may cause irritation, pain, watering in eyes and may even cause blurriness for many days.”

Said Cllr Duffy: “The Late Late Show and RTÉ both came under widespread and fully warranted criticism when they displayed a so-called map of Ireland that had amputated the Six Counties. “One would have thought they’d have learnt their lesson however Friday night’s episode saw viewers in the North again snubbed when they were excluded from taking part in the show’s weekly phone-in competition. “The Late Late Show is an Irish institution, it is the longest running talk show in TV history, people in Derry and Belfast have grown up watching the show in the same way as people in Galway, Kerry and Dublin have. “It is an established part of our collective Irish lives. “RTÉ’s corporate charter compels them to reflect and engage audiences across the entirety of Ireland but yet another exclusion of a large swathe of Ireland and indeed an RTÉ audience defies that.“Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile will be contacting RTÉ and ‘The Late Late Show’ to convey the frustration and disappointment of those who have been in touch with the party and to encourage them to stop insulting this substantial section of their audience,” she added.Another Six County snub by RTÉ’s ‘The Late Late Show’ – Duffy was last modified: January 27th, 2019 by John2John2 Tags:
